Tutoring with Glenn

Even if the subjects we need to work on are academic in nature, I usually suggest having a STEAM* break in the middle for variety and fun. (*STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering Art and Math.)

What will tutoring look like?

Tutoring looks different in every case especially as I teach the full range of ages from kindergarten to adults. For children, the process I use is to find out from the parents what needs to be worked on. I usually also ask to see report cards (if the family agrees). I also talk to the student and learn what motivates them and I work to discern what types of activities will benefit the student the most. My tutoring sessions are planned to include a lot of highly motivating games and activities that teach the concepts we are working on. At the elementary and middle school levels, subjects like math and reading are easy to teach using simple games that focus on skill development. Writing is harder to gamify (but possible). You may be wondering why I would gamify the learning at all. Often people who learned by traditional means (memorization and worksheets for example) assume that everyone else learns the same way that they did. If only that were the case.

Why gamify learning?

Motivation is the main reason gamification produces better results than traditional methods of teaching. If you ask a student on their summer holiday to do a math worksheet, most will not be excited and they will slowly (grudgingly) answer the questions. If you take those same math questions, write them on flash cards, and make a game of it, the students will beg to play the game. This is the advantage of one on one or small group tutoring. If you take the student out of the classroom and give then the same kind of task they do in a classroom, you have no advantage (and several disadvantages in my opinion).

List of subjects I teach:

  • reading

  • writing (creative writing and other forms)

  • mathematics (including lateral thinking)

  • science

  • STEAM projects (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics)

  • block-based coding such as Scratch and Code.org

  • liturgical kickboxing

  • 3D modelling and game design in virtual reality (I have VR headsets so a headset is not necessarily required)

  • executive function coaching (I have many years of experience working with students with ADHD and ASD)

Online and in person tutoring are options to consider.

Tutoring Cost Guide

Due to the range of topics and activities I teach (not to mention locations), it is not simple to set a fair price that reflects the work I do. I am usually able to find a balance between the family’s needs and a price that works for everyone. Please also keep in mind that I am a certified teacher and have over 30 years experience teaching, tutoring, and creating exciting science and STEAM lessons.

Academic Tutoring and Coding

This category includes school subjects like reading, writing, mathematics, basic science as well as coding due to the fact that these topics do not require intensive preparation.

$60 per hour in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, and for online classes

$80+ per hour for locations outside the aforementioned cities

Resource or Preparation Intensive Subjects

This category includes hands-on science, STEAM project instruction, 3D modelling/game design in virtual reality, and executive function coaching.

$80 per hour for Vancouver, Richmond, and Burnaby, and for VR classes

$100+ per hour for locations outside the aforementioned cities

Additional Notes

  • I may be willing* to lower the price for families that wish to have multiple hour sessions. This may result from teaching multiple topics, multiple students or both. Due to the variety of games, challenges, work, and activities I plan, working with one student for 2 or 3 hours at a time is not onerous. (* depending on what is required)

  • If my instruction is primarily academic, I usually suggest a 5-10 minute STEAM break halfway through the lesson for something exciting to look forward to. This is optional, but highly recommended. There is no extra cost for including a STEAM break.

  • VR instruction is not limited by geography. It can happen from any location in the world. There is no extra cost for locations outside Vancouver, Richmond, and Burnaby unless I am teaching VR in person.
